In the absence of a police or traffic enforcer, traffic lights serve as the guide for right-of-way. They automatically control and regulate traffic flow. (Note: In intersections where there is a traffic light and a traffic enforcer, however, you must to follow the traffic enforcer’s guidance.)
If you’ve just got your new license or a new secondhand car, then you need to learn how to maneuver your ride on roads with traffic lights. Below are the light colors you need to take note of.
Red
Means you need to make a complete stop at the clearly-marked stop lines before crosswalks or before intersections to allow access to other road users who will use the intersection or crosswalks.
Yellow
Also means stop. If you are approaching an intersection and the traffic light switches to yellow, you must stop. However, in the event that you are not able to stop safely, proceed with caution. In situations when you are in the middle of the intersection when the light switched to yellow, you are still allowed to proceed, but do so with extreme caution.
Green
Proceed, but only when the intersection is clear. You must yield to pedestrians who are crossing, even if the light is already green.
Green Arrow
Drive only in the direction of the arrow. Yield the right-of-way to other vehicles and pedestrians in the intersection.
Yellow Arrow
Do not enter the intersection if you can stop safely. If you cannot stop safely, proceed only in the direction of the arrow with extreme caution.
(Note: When a yellow light follows a green light, get ready to stop. In cases when the light changes from green to yellow while you are already in the intersection, you can still proceed, but do so with extreme caution.)
Flashing Red
Stop and proceed only when it safe to do so.
Flashing Yellow
Proceed with caution. Yield the right-of-way to vehicles already crossing the intersection.
Traffic Light Not Working
If the traffic light is not in operation, an intersection becomes a “STOP” sign controlled intersection.
Pedestrian Traffic Light with Red Man Icon
Do not cross the street.
Pedestrian Traffic Light with Green Man Icon
Proceed to cross the street when it is safe to do so.
Wrapping Up
By heeding the traffic lights installed on the road you’re driving at, you’ll be able to prolong the life of your beloved pre-owned car, as well as ensure yours and your passengers’ safety.
